Natural Vitamins VS Synthetic Vitamins
Let’s talk about a topic that is very upsetting to me and one that you should be well aware of. There is a 95% plus chance that the vitamins you are currently taking are harming you. How can that be? You may be asking. Well, 95% or more of the vitamins that are sold today are synthetic. They are manufactured with chemicals in a lab.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “oh no, I take a really good one and my doctor even suggested I take it.” Well, let me just stop you there because if your doctor suggested you take it, unless that doctor is a licensed natural practitioner, or they lean strongly towards a holistic or functional medicine practice, there is a very high probability that what they have suggested is a synthetic vitamin.
The majority of practicing doctors today still believe heavily that a pharmaceutical company or a surgery is the only solution to health problems and deficiencies of the masses. Unfortunately, that includes vitamins. In many ways it is not their fault as they are given very little training in medical school, on how nutrition effects the human body.
In a 2016 study, researchers at Case Western Reserve University examined data from 25 family medicine, internal medicine and OB-GYN medical residency programs throughout Ohio: What they found is that these programs averaged 2.8 hours of instruction on obesity, nutrition and physical activity counseling.
Why has nutrition been given short shrift in medical schools? There are several reasons, especially a lack of funding and a shortage of trained faculty to provide high-quality nutrition instruction, and a focus on treating rather than preventing diseases, says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “The assumption is that doctors will refer patients to dietitians.” Plus, the medical school “curriculum is crowded, and it’s hard to make room for new priorities,” notes Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and a U.S. News Eat+Run contributor. “The basic structure of medical education was put in place in 1920, long before lifestyle-related chronic disease was a major public health focus.”
Bottom line is that your doctor is not meaning to give you poor advice but most of them haven’t been taught themselves what proper advice to give. Plus, they have been taught that synthetic medication is the answer to almost every health issue there is so why would synthetic vitamins not be just as effective?
The answer to that question is a decently long scientific one that big pharma likes to fight to the death on. Seems sort of ridiculous to try and convince us that some super cheap form of chemicals cooked up in a lab is just as good for the human body as the natural substance plucked from nature, so why would they do it? Well, you know why! MONEY for one! The synthetic form of vitamin B12 alone is 100x’s cheaper than the natural form of B12.
Almost every major brand of vitamins sold today in grocery or big box stores, are all, or in part synthetic and produced by pharmaceutical companies. Brands like Centrum, One A Day and even Nature Made use synthetic vitamins! Yes, the Nature Made brand sells synthetic vitamins.
Check it out for yourself. You can go right on their website. It doesn’t take long to find the synthetic forms of vitamins printed in black and white.
For instance, the synthetic form of vitamin B12 is called cyanocobalamin. It actually has cyanide in it. Yes, the toxic substance, cyanide. There are naturally occurring forms of cyanide, but the cyanide used with synthetic vitamin B12 is NOT natural it is synthetic.
The liver must then remove the cyanide molecule from the vitamin and then flush it out of your body. This requires using up so-called “methyl groups” of molecules in your body that are needed to fight things like homocysteine (high levels cause heart disease). By taking low-quality cyanocobalamin, you’re actually stealing methyl groups from your body and making it do more work at the biochemical level. This uses up substances such as glutathione that are often in short supply anyway, potentially worsening your overall health situation rather than helping it. This is one of the reasons why low-grade vitamins may actually be worse for your body than taking nothing at all!
When it comes to B12 the only form you should consider buying or consuming is Methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin is the all-natural form of B12 and extremely beneficial to the body. As a matter of fact B12 is so critical to every body function I have written an separate article on it alone!
Let’s be clear, it’s not just synthetic vitamin B12 that can be harmful to the body. All Synthetic vitamins can very harmful to your system. It’s been proven that even something as simple is synthetic calcium can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke by as much as 30%!
These are staggering numbers and unfortunately the media lumps all supplements together. They don’t understand the difference between an all-natural supplement compared to a synthetic one and that can create a great deal of confusion when reporting potentially negative effects from supplements or vitamins. They just don’t know how to discern between the two groups.
Once you know the facts the bigger question becomes, why would synthetic vitamins be used instead of the all-natural version if synthetic could be harmful? Well, as stated earlier, money plays a huge role with synthetic being FAR cheaper than all-natural but one of the other critical reasons is simply shelf life. A synthetic vitamin can sit on the shelf for far longer than its all-natural counterpart.
A longer shelf life doesn’t just help the supplements that are sitting in the local grocery store, but also, the food that we eat that is being fortified and enriched with vitamins. All of those need to be able to sit on the shelf at the store and in your pantry, for a very long period of time as well. It might take a while before you purchase and eat that box of cereal or that loaf of bread, or those crackers or that juice. Let’s also think about who you are probably feeding that stuff to? Your kiddo’s, your babies, your family. Foods that are “Fortified” and “Enriched” have synthetic vitamins in them.
So please, do yourself a favor, become knowledgeable about the different forms of vitamins. There is a true difference between all-natural and synthetic and a huge difference between the bodies ability to absorb even the all-natural versions of supplements.
For myself and my family I use only high quality, all-natural supplements via a topical patch. This dramatically increases the amount that’s absorbed and then available for use by the system. TheVitaminPatch.com formulations have made a profound difference in how I feel, my family feels and our overall health.
I encourage you to do the same for you and your family with an all-natural, high quality supplement that can make a true difference in how you feel today and your health long term.
